Talking 'bout that Domination

I just can't resist poking fun at -- or starting an argument with -- a smart colleague. (Or betraying my roots with a Boomer song reference. What am I, a teevee producer?) In the context of mobile operating systems, Michael Gartenberg says "The notion that Microsoft needs to dominate in order to be a success is wrong in general."

Ummm, somebody better tell that to Wall Street. And, more importantly, to Microsoft itself.

Far as I've seen, Microsoft is only successful -- meaning, wildly profitable and dominating, with supremely satisfied customers -- in platform markets where it has 85+% share. That means Windows and Office, and browsers, back when they mattered.

Ask BillG and Ballmer how they feel about server operating systems, about database, about search, about mobile, about cell phones, about music and DRM, about TV OS, about portals, about small business accounting, about graphics software, about game consoles...

I'm not sure Microsoft knows how to build great products and hugely satisfied customers where it doesn't have dominant share. I'm sure it does where it does.
