Who says you can't manufacture a hit anymore? Disney's Pirates sequel sets the new opening weekend record. Too bad it's half the fun (and seems twice the length) of the original. The Tomatometer gets it about right -- 52% fresh.

But seriously, all reviews aside, it's pretty clear Disney hasn't lost its franchise marketing touch. The DVD will be in time for holiday shopping, and we'll do the whole thing over again next year. (The third sequel was filmed simultaneously.) A big bet pays off. Notice I said "big," not "risky." Sitting on, and screwing up, the Matrix sequels, now that was risky.
