Silly DRM Dep't<< Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc | Main | Off to San Jose >> Michael Gartenberg | October 10, 2003, 01:39 PM In what appears to be a little bit a of turn about the folks at SunnComm Technologies are not going to sue a Princeton University graduate student after all. Of course, this renders the scathing post that I prepared somewhat moot. The student published a paper earlier this week that explained how to bypass CD copy protection technology simply by pressing the Shift key, thus disabling Windows AutoPlay mechanism. Initially SunnComm was accusing him of being guilt of... well, pretty much of everything (with the possible exception of the Kennedy assasination) and looking rather ridiculous doing so. Not nearly as ridiculous at their DRM dependent on Windows functionality that is easily bypassed though. Copyrights need to be respected and most consumers are prepared to pay for their content. Legal offerings with DRM that repsects customer needs like that from Napster and Apple's iTunes Music Store get that. SunnComm doesn't. Labels would be wise to avoid paying for this type of technology in the future. |
