Portable Media Center

Joe Wilcox picked this up before I did. I've had a chance to see both units in early form. The Samsung is a little smaller (and a has a little flip out stand, perfect for your tray table) but at the expense of what is likely to be shorter battery life. These are the first vide players that look good enough to actually be used. The key is the fact that they are both tied to legal video content - namely recorded TV shows and movies. While there will be a lot of comparisons between these devices and other music players, they are really quite different, although they share some overlap in functionality. Video is a different experiential mode than music. That doesn't mean that video isn't an appropriate mobile format as some would say. It just means that video (other than portable DVD players) hasn't been done well or even so-so. That's about to change I think.

The rumors circulating this morning are true. Amazon has started taking pre-orders for Portable Media Center, from two manufacturers. Information is available here.
