Should Microsoft embrace Linux for handhelds? NO, NO and NO<< Posting light, Surgery next week | Main | Are you afraid to blog? You might have good reason to be afraid >> Michael Gartenberg | October 15, 2004, 01:36 PM OK, This begged for one more post... my favorite quote in the article "Where Linux takes root is in new applications like Web servers and handheld devices (Linux has near zero share in handhelds and phones, hardly taking root). As those get better, applications will get sucked off the desktop onto the Internet, and that's what will undo Microsoft" Huh? Why would Linux in a web server affect applications on the desktop? Or in handheld for that matter (unless anyone is predicting AGAIN that cellphones will kill PCs). I like Mr. Christensen's books and I agree with a lot of what he says (but a lot if it is also post hoc ergo propter hoc) but he's totally wrong here. In fact, Microsoft is at a point where they are actually making gains in the mobile space and creating synergy among their platforms. There's a lot the mobile group needs to do. To paraphrase Dorothy Parker, this idea should not be tossed aside lightly, it should be thrown with great force.
