PR folks do their jobs, we do ours

Scoble turns the gripe Russ has with PR folks spamming bloggers into a general spam but discussion but Russ makes some interesting points. Having worked as an analyst for more than a decade Russ , I can tell you that you're just seeing the byproduct that comes with being popular. People want to get a piece of your time and want to spin their clients in the best way and get them notices. Hey, that's their job. A good PR person will reach out to you and get you to notice what their clients are doing and know what's important to you. I work with these folks every day and some are better than others. It's not just about size either. While I work with firms like Edelman, WaggEd and Weber shandwick, small folks can have influence. Renee Blodgett, for example got me looking at Newsgator for example. Let's face if it. If you're a popular blogger in the space, you're going to have PR folks after you. The good ones will be of great help and the bad ones should just be ignored (I get lots of shotgunned emails from PR folks looking for coverage from folks who clearly have no idea what I do or cover.). I've met Steve a few times and he doesn't seem like the type to spam inappropriately but then again, we all make mistakes. Bottom line, PR folks don't waste time with folks that don't matter so be flattered by the attention, let the good ones help you with what you do and let evolution take care of the poor ones.

Russ Beattie is complainingabout PR types who are getting into blogging and who are "pitching" products to him. Russ: there's something far worse that's eating away the usefulness of blogging technology: spam. And I'm not talking about the kind that Steve Rubel emails to usonce in a while. I can deal with a pitch from a PR guy once in a while, but we should be focusing all of our energies on ridding our comments of spam, ridding our ping servers of spam, ridding our search engines and blog services of spam.
