NBC to sell TV shows to (naive?) DVR owners... hmmm

NBC and DirectTV have announced that they will sell epidoic TV shows for $0.99 per show to users of the DirectTV DVR. Take that Apple. Of course, I might ask if you own a DirectTV DVR, why don't you just record the show for free and skip the fee? Did anyone even think of that? Is this some sort of play for folks who have DVRs but don't know how to use them? Perhaps if there's a blackout in your area and you miss a show? I could go on but I'll stop here.

If I were cynical, I'd say, geez folks, get on a plane and go see Steve Jobs :) If I were more cynical, I would ask why Microsoft isn't cutting any of these deals to get some premium video content on to their devices.

Update - Thomas Hawk, says pretty much the same thing and points to similar deal CBS has with Comcast. No mention of anything about portablity, that's a driving factor why folks will want this stuff, not replace their HiDef broadcasts.
