To Blog or not to Blog?

Om Malik points me to Werner Vogels, Amazon's CTO, who asks the question to Robert Scoble and Shel Israel, Why should corporporations blog? Actually what he says is.

"I wanted them abandon their fuzzy group hug approach, and counter me with hard arguments why they were right and I was wrong. Instead they appeared shell-shocked that anyone actually had the guts to challenge the golden wonder boys of blogging and not accept their religion instantly"

Mr. Vogels is of course, correct but like most things, there's no right or wrong answer. Blogging should be done when you have a reason to do so. If you don't have something to say, perhaps blogging isn't thing for your firm. As I've often discussed in the past, there's a potential downside to jumping in and not having a plan. Of course, it helps when you have buy in at the top. There are lots of good reasons for corporations to blog and real benefits that can be achieved. Seems to me the case just wasn't made correctly to Mr. Vogels and perhaps for Amazon, it's not the right thing to do. On the other hand, I could think of several reasons why it might be a very god thing for them as well.
