Yahoo introduces Yahoo Go for TV. The question is why?<< Being Indispensable | Main | On Platform Shifts >> Michael Gartenberg | April 26, 2006, 01:19 PM Yahoo announced their new version of Yahoo Go! for TV, based on the stuff they bought a few weeks ago. We've just wrapped up a big report on the Evolution of the PC as it moves into the space of a first class entertainment device (clients that need a sneek peek should drop me a line) and one of the hardest issues is getting consumers to connect their PCs to their TVs. This is a familiar issue and I've talked a lot about it in the past. What I don't understand is why Yahoo is spending the time and effort to do this. Microsoft's already much further ahead (from what I've seen of the download) and offers much better out of the box experience. There's no reason that Yahoo can't offer the unique services it brings to the table, like Yahoo Photos or Music via the MCE interface. This is one of those things where it just doesn't make sense to re-invent the wheel. While MSFT and Yahoo both partner as well as compete, this a time where partnership makes more sense. Why Yahoo thinks they're going to do a better job of evangelizing the link between the PC and the TV is beyond me at this point. UPDATE - Thomas Hawk asks pretty much the same thing. |
