Where is Sony going?<< On the Road, SF and Seattle | Main | What's "Building B" building? >> Michael Gartenberg | June 01, 2006, 09:00 AM David Card makes some good points following the New Yorker article on Sir Howard Stringer and Sony. I also read the article and it didn't leave me with a very positive feeling that Sony's about to turn a corner. The departure of Phil Wiser underscores the fact that Sony has done little to challenge Apple and Sony Connect is a mess at this point. With the launch of Urge closely tied to Microsoft's WMP11, Sony is the odd man out in this space and it's hard to see how they go it alone. What's worse, as David points out, is that 38% to 69% of Sony operating income comes from Playsation. Microsoft and Nintendo only need to do a little better than expected to cause some serious damage to Sony's bottom line. It's time for some bold moves by Sir Howard if Sony is going to be more than just the remnants of what was once the most powerful brand in consumer electronics. |
