What's "Building B" building?<< Where is Sony going? | Main | Google Spreadsheet doesn't add up >> Michael Gartenberg | June 05, 2006, 05:28 PM So what's Building B actually building? I had a pretty interesting chat with Phil Wiser, Sony's ex-CTO, who's the new chairman and president over there this afternoon. Most interesting. Seems they're focused on bringing digital media, with an emphasis on video and music to the mainstream consumer with a combined service as well as hardware. What's interesting is they feel that piggybacking on the standard consumer broadband offering isn't the way to do this. They also promise more than user created content and in fact recognize the need for premium music and video. Too early to handicap their chances but I did hear a few things that I liked. The fact that they're focusing on mainstream, not enthusiast markets, the recognition that today's broadband and home networking services leave a lot to be desired and the knowledge that mainstream audiences want mainstream content. That's about all I can say for now, but this is one to keep an eye on. |
