Every video game console on the market for the last twenty years has been a closed system. While third parties create software (quite profitably) they can't simply create the software themselves and ship it directly to consumers without approval from Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. That model hasn't hurt them (or the iPod) for that matter.

It will be interesting to see what other features Apple has planned for the iPhone and who they're working with to make it happen
