HTC Advantage and Shift - First Thoughts<< Vista Off to a Good Start | Main | iPod Love? >> Michael Gartenberg | March 26, 2007, 04:52 PM HTC is bringing the Advantage to the US under the HTC brand. The Advantage is an interesting device, and I spent some time with it last week. The specs are pretty impressive.
It's not your standard smartphone and it probably wouldn't do well if sold by one of the carriers. Seems like a good idea for HTC to go direct on this one. Now, these devices that fall somewhere into the in-between phone/PDA and notebook category have been tried before and most of them failed but I think times are different and that HTC could have some success with the Advantage. First, the older devices lacked connectivity making them useless when not tethered to a PC. The ability to gain anytime access to email, web and other services makes these devices far more useful. The Advantage also has some serious storage so for most users, they can carry around a full complement of information and data and share it. It's not the right device for everyone and for many folks, there's a need for full Windows apps not just a subest of stuff running Windows Mobile. (and HTC is also bringing a full Windows machine called the Shift to market as well, looks like a it's going to be a nice little computer and yes, it does Aero just fine on the unit I saw) but if you look at HTC across the board, they're bringing a whole range of mobile devices to market that hit a different set of needs for different users. There is no one correct device for everyone and it's interesting to see this strategy of overlapping devices and functions to hit different market segments. |
