Twitter Mania

Thomas Hawk talks about the Twitter mania happening at SXSW. Ok. I signed up a while ago after Thomas invited me but I still don't get it. I agree with Jeremy Toeman's comments.

"To me it's just something that has got some SHORT-term popularity and will eventually fade back into a neat tool people don't really use anymore. The reality check is this: life is, for the most part, dull. I just don't need to see updates like "sipping a coffee" or 'waiting in line to buy a coffee' or 'thinking about going to the Starbucks'.

Perhaps I need to give it another try but it seems to me, this is going to be a really short lived fad. I could see where a group of good friends might use it under certain circumstances but long term? no way.

Update, Dave Winer suggests caution in my skepticism. I think perhaps there may be business uses for this as he describes but i don't think the personal use has legs long term. As he puts it  "if I were a Scoble fanboy, I would love that he posts every event in his busy life to his Twitter channel" and perhaps that's where it will find the niche. I don't think i would compare it to blogging just yet.
