The really important news in the new MacBook Pros<< Death of the Smartphone | Main | Hype Machine + Last.FM together >> Michael Gartenberg | February 27, 2008, 08:52 AM While some folks weren't blown away by the new computers Apple introduced yesterday, there's something quite important about the new stuff. Apple has added support for multi-touch to the MacBook Pro line, following up on the feature first seen in the MacBook Air. Apple seems pretty serious about this and has filed patents for even more advanced features. This is really important and underscores the changing nature in user experiences that consumers are likely to see over the next 12-18 months. It's something that serves to drive the next wave of UI forward and gives Apple some strong differentiation in their products. Since it's done at the hardware and OS level, it means it's something that can be easily supported at the application level through some set of APIs. The net is going to be some rather interesting applications for the platform. I've already gotten quite used to it and I find it harder to use a non-multi touch enables trackpad on other PCs. This is important as it seems like something Apple is slowly incorporating into products across the line. Be interesting to see how this makes its way into a future iMac. (Question, is the correct plural of MacBook Pro, MacBooks Pro as in attorneys general? UPDATE, Peter Rojas answered the question some time ago for iPod Shuffle, I assume the same rules would apply to MacBook Pros but I'm not entirely sure it's the correct way.) |
