What's in dot-com?

Of purely academic interest, but very interesting nonetheless, Boing Boingtoday points toward an analysis of the ".com" domain name space by Dennis Forbes, who evidently has too much time on his hands (his excuse was testing SQL Server 2005, but come on: charts! graphs!).

Fun facts include:

Every single possible 2- or 3-letter domain name is taken, as are nearly 80% of 4-letter domain names.

The largest single group of domain names are those with 11 letters (which seems like a lot to me, though then again, "jupitermedia".com has 12).

"ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.com" is taken.

All of the male and female first names, and the top 10,000 family names, listed by the US Census Bureau, are taken.

Anyway, even if I don't think any actionable advice really flows out of it, it's still cool data, a snapshot of the biggest domain on the Web.
