Leave it to Sweden

Always the techie early adopters, the Swedish government (or a faction therein) has decided, for reasons unclear to me, to open the first official foreign embassy in Second Life.

As someone who has flirted with the US foreign service as a career at various points of my life, this is...pretty weird, if pretty interesting. It's basically going to be a clearinghouse of information for people who want to visit the real country.

I feel like most of the commercial development of SL to date revolves around the marketing possibilities, and tapping into the general SL hype cycle. The reasons for a government to establish a presence there are a little less clear.

Still, though, it's something to watch, and the more stuff there IS in SL, the more reasons to go there, and the more the population will grow. And if the day ever does come when folks can have their avatars take care of things like standing on line waiting to file a visa application, so much the better.

Virtual herring, anyone?
