Apple of My I(tunes)<< Akimbo Throws in the TV Towel | Main | Joost the Beginning >> Joseph Laszlo | April 10, 2007, 04:46 PM Apple yesterday announced that it's sold the 100 millionth iPod, in a celebratory press release complete with quotes from Mary J. Blige and John Mayer and Lance Armstrong. More interesting to me than the big number were some of the smaller numbers in the release, updating cumulative sales of videos through iTunes. From a library of over 350 TV shows and 400 movies, Apple's moved 50m TV episodes and 1.3m films. (And 2.5 billion songs.) That's a lot of video, and a fair amount of money. Something like $100m in TV revenue, and call it like $15-$20m in movie revenue. I'd love to see the shape of the growth curve there. I'd also love to know, and I'm not even sure Apple knows, where that video's being watched; my bet is a fair amount of it is on the PC, as opposed to iPods. |
