Joe's Rule of New Technology Mass Adoption

I semi-formulated this rule here back in 2003 (good grief, have I been blogging that long?). It goes like this: Any new technology is on the cusp of true mass-market adoption when it is cool enough to be mentioned in passing on a WB show.

I said it in the context of text messaging and "Buffy;" now that the WB no longer exists I'm going to posit it holds for The CW, and observe that last night on "Gilmore Girls," Rory's boyfriend Logan, who is smitten with all things Web 2.0 (having already lost millions in a failed startup venture), talked about a paradigm shift driven by immersive virtual environments--"like Second Life, or World of Warcraft."

Can it be much longer til someone builds out Virtual Stars Hollow in SL?

P.S. YES, okay? I admit it. It's my most guilty TV. Leave me alone.
