Together we can do more
Orange's New Vision and Brand Campaign - Premiers in the UK tomorrow with its new “I am” film. So exit "the Future is bright" and welcome the new vision expressed in the statement "together we can do more". The rationale behind this global campaign is quite interesting. See excerpt from...( more )

Era-Ender?
The more I think about it, the less this is like "slip-sliding into a recession" than "End of an Era." Starbucks Corp. on Tuesday effectively ended its era of blanket expansion by saying it will close 500 more locations in the U.S. and cut 7% of its work force. Starbucks...( more )

Viacom Taking Lessons from the RIAA?
The BBC reports that a court has just ruled that Google hand over details of every video ever watched on YouTube to Viacom. Yes , you read correctly, every video ever watched. But most importantly details of every viewer (including IP addresses) are also to be handed over. Viacom’s dispute...( more )

Back to the Future of Federated Identity?
A JupiterResearch report slated for publication late this year will take a new look at the topic of Federated Identity services. Once the rage in online financial services, most banks eliminated their offerings in the early 2000s when consumer demand lagged expectations. Given the limitations of Web 1.0, this...( more )

Online Travel Agencies: Time for Creative Marketing
These may not be easy times for online travel agency marketers, but they are certainly creative times. Priceline announced today that they are lowering hotel booking fees and eliminating change and cancellation fees. Last month, Orbitz launched its Price Assurance program to give passengers cash back if another traveler books...( more )

FiOS vs. U-verse: Would You Like To Play A Game?
Back in early June, communications intelligence firm OneTrak noted that Verizon had sought citywide cable TV franchises in certain north Dallas communities that are adjacent to its existing service footprint, but that are currently served by AT&T and Time Warner Cable. At first, I was taken aback by this news....( more )

VirginMedia Loses ASA Ruling on Marketing of Speed
Info on the ruling. Unlimited broadband = 12 minutes - My take in April on the detail of this traffic management scheme. As I've said before, it is in the broadband industry's interests to be clearer and less ambiguous on the way they market broadband and broadband speeds. Otherwise if...( more )

Video VC Funding Still Strong
While Hitwise was announcing YouTube has taken share to its largest lead, 75% of traffic to all video sites, two funding announcements came out. Veoh took in $30 million earlier this month and Chinese video site Youku received $40 million this week. Taking on YouTube may seem like a suicide...( more )

I'm ready to own a top-level domain
Way back in 2002, I blogged "Let a thousand top-level domains bloom". How about a million? A billion? ICANN wants to allow anyone with the gumption and the tech chops to own their own top-level domain. When we end the artificial scarcity of domain names, we'll end the artificially high...( more )

Global payments
I’ve been working with my colleague Ed Kountz on a global payments report – we’ve just finished up a webtrack that looks at the different payment online methods offered by both global and local retailers in Europe and Asia. Not surprisingly, local companies and the most forward-thinking global players tend...( more )

More Domain Names...?
The ICANN votes today in Paris on whether or not to approve new domain name extensions from .com and .net to dot anything. Both CNN and the BBC are following the story, but I’m wondering if this will really be a benefit to consumers. Sure brands will be able to...( more )

MySpace's Flashier Front Page
MySpace debuted it's new front page design this week (among other user oriented tweaks.) Today, however, was the premier front page advertising takeover. It features a skin and a video box for the new Batman movie. The player worked very well, and I am happy to see that they used...( more )

Admob Servces 100M Mobile Ad Impressions Each Day
Admob hit (what I think is) a big milestone in May. They are now serving 100M ad impressions each day to cell phones. (See their May Metrics report) The US represents 45 percent of this traffic. Admob serves ads on to 5000 publisher sites. They are not the only mobile...( more )

Online Performance Affects Retailers' Credit Ratings
The Wall Street Journal reported today that Moody's Investor Service has started to factor in online sales of major retailers in its credit ratings. Now, online performance will affect not only revenue and profit but also the cost of credit. It's another indication that the impact of online sales is...( more )

Update on Online Retail in Light of the Current Economic Situation
We continue to hear from economists that the rise in prices for gas and food-staple prices here in the US is driven by largely global demand. Coupled with that is a softening US job market and sagging home prices. Customers...( more )

Deal for a National WiMAX Network Announced
Sprint, Clearwire, and additional investors (Intel, Google, Comcast, Time Warner, Bright House Networks) have reached an agreement regarding a national WiMAX build out through a new company named Clearwire. My colleague Julie Ask wrote a very insightful blog on the motivations of the investors yesterday. As she implied, success of...( more )

The IVR Revolution Will NOT Be Televised: We Predicted it First
A recent BusinessWeek story highlights the dwindling popularity of the pro-consumer crusade established by GetHuman.com. Page views on the site have dwindled from about 40,000 a day in the spring of 2006 to some 4,000. The discussion board, while still active, has quieted down since 2006, when thousands of comments...( more )

Not Always for Geezers
My colleague David Card makes a good point about the merit of emusic’s unprotected MP3’s and their _gradual_ foray into the “mainstream.” Now this is the point that I evoke the Proton Pack wearing words of Harold Ramis – “whatever you do, don’t cross the beams, Ray.” Crossing my beams...( more )

Talking Multimedia at SES
I moderated a panel on ‘Optimizing for video search’, a topic that we wrote on last year here. What has changed since last year? Increasing advertiser interest and agency enthusiasm, for one. According to our survey, 15 percent of search marketers performed multimedia search optimization in 2006, and 36% plan...( more )
