Are Kids Using Kindle?
Right now (Saturday morning) there are two bestellers in Amazon's top 100 Children's books that are Kindle editions, i.e., for its digital e-book. There are none in the Top 100 for adults. Does that mean more Kindle users are kids? Doubtful. The more likely answer is that more Kindle users...( more )

Conscientiously Objecting to Twitter
Since my peers are jumping onboard, I’ll offer a contrarian’s opinion and my rant about Twitter. Someone asked me recently if they could follow me on Twitter and my response was an emphatic No! Admittedly, I’ve checked on Twitter to see what individuals are up to – or even last...( more )

Twitter
Like my colleague, I am also a late joiner in the Twitter dance. I had always been reluctant to join the micro-blogging phenomenon (I started this blog 3 years ago) but was finally intrigued by the fact that the company would stop delivering SMS alerts for free outside the US....( more )

XOHM WiMAX Launches in Baltimore; Will a New Type of Cord-Cutter Emerge?
The focus here is on wireless Internet access, but home service is offered too. Here are the breakdowns: • Home: $25 per month for six months, $35 thereafter. Twenty-five dollars is a steal, and even $35 is pretty aggressive, particularly for a standalone service (that is, not bundled with voice...( more )

Germany or Australia?
Having just completed a report that looks at how companies are leveraging the Internet to build their global brands, I've been spending time recently looking at global perceptions of certain brands. I was therefore interested to read Anholt-Gfk Roper's most recent Nation Brands Index (NBI) report. The index, which is...( more )

OneWebDay in San Francisco by Meraki
Monday will be OneWebDay in San Francisco. Efforts around Gavin Newsom's vision to create an access cloud around San Francisco stalled a while back when plans that involved Earthlink ran into snags in the approval process. And, eventually Earthlink left the business of Muni Wi-Fi. A new initiative with Meraki...( more )

I'm not a PC...
...nor am I a Mac. Microsoft's new "I'm a PC" ads are very postmodern, as they deal with the subtext of Apple's advertising (PC users are nerds*) but not the explicit message (Macs are easier to use, Macs are easier to set up, Macs are easier to interface, Macs are...( more )

Not Always for Geezers
My colleague David Card makes a good point about the merit of emusic’s unprotected MP3’s and their _gradual_ foray into the “mainstream.” Now this is the point that I evoke the Proton Pack wearing words of Harold Ramis – “whatever you do, don’t cross the beams, Ray.” Crossing my beams...( more )

Talking Multimedia at SES
I moderated a panel on ‘Optimizing for video search’, a topic that we wrote on last year here. What has changed since last year? Increasing advertiser interest and agency enthusiasm, for one.
