IBM on demand business transformation<< Book Review: Information Architecture | Main | Autonomic Computing is not Pixie Dust >> David Schatsky | June 26, 2003, 02:56 PM I'm live at IBM's latest analyst event to explain its on demand strategy. The good news, while cell phone coverage is spotty here in Palisades, NY, the building's a giant hot spot. IBM's communication strategy today is focused on showing how on demand and business transformation outsourcing (BPO at other firms) play out in specific industries. The retail examples are met here with lots of skepticisim from the audience. "What's 'on demand' about that?" is a typical refrain. I'm skeptical because IBM's shiny vision of how "on demand" will change retail needs to reckon with the relatively slow progress of many online retailers to take advantage of a dynamic, data-rich environment to optomize their online operations. Now that most retail is multi-channel (online/off line), retailers who want to improve store performance, should use the online channel as a learning opportunity. If you can't make profitable use of data there, you'll never get it in the store. More later. |
