Off the Grid in Maine<< Autonomic Computing is not Pixie Dust | Main | Cisco Sells Wi-Fi as Productivity Aid >> David Schatsky | September 02, 2003, 04:24 PM I just returned from a splendid vacation on an island in Maine. The entire state was spared the blackout of 8/14. The Bangor Daily News the next day carried the headline, "Blackout Could Happen in Maine." We were gloriously off the grid. No national cell phone carrier reached us. And Internet access was scarce. Residents of the island can sign up for half-hour timeslots to use a low-speed internet connection at the small public library. Next summer, a flier stated, wireless access will be available, "even from the parking lot." |
