If any doubt remained that Google intends to compete as a portal, and not just a search engine, today's launch of Google Finance should dispel that doubt.

It's a pretty slick experience. Notably, it's implemented in Flash, in contrast with Google Maps, which is a poster child for AJAX.

David Card's recent report on online media concentration illustrates vividly the opportunity Google is pursuit with its emerging portal strategy: the share of consumer online time spent on Google properties is disproportionately small compared to Google's share of online ad revenue. Google Finance aims to change the equation.
