The Sonic Shuffle

Earlier this week, my colleague Lydia Loizides blogged about the new Sonic the Hedgehog toys coming to McDonalds Happy Meals. Well, they're here today, and my eight-year-old daughter had to have one right away (I picked up two more for her friends' Friday night sleepover).

McDonalds has six, mind consuming handheld games--five with Sonic the Hedgehog characters--for the kiddies. Based on my daughter's quick review, these freebees won't be replacing Game Boys any time soon. But the premium does raise the whole marketing push around toys, kids and food to a new level. What next, disposable game console discs that expire after a week of play?

Frankly, as much as my daughter likes the mini-handheld game, she would rather interact with people. The Sonic games are a nice novelty, but she would have preferred Sonic, Tails, Amy or Knuckles figures to play pretend with her friends.
