The Popular in Popular Science<< Apple Gets in iTunes 4.5 | Main | iPod mini for Mom? Maybe Next Year >> Joe Wilcox | April 30, 2004, 07:38 AM Yesterday I sat in the doctor's office waiting for confirmation that I was suffering from strep throat and hoping to get a prescription for a bacteria-killing antibiotic. (Yes. Yes. Strep and drugs.) I rustled through the magazines, desperately looking for interesting reading to nick the boredom and take my mind off my suffering body. Among the reads: Popular Science. I hadn't read Popular Science in years, and curiosity nudged about how the magazine might have changed over the last 20 years or so. Editorially, Popular Science appeared about the same. Times have changed, though. I skimmed the table contents of the March 2004 issue, unexpectedly finding this story: A how-to on changing an iPod battery. Is the iPod that popular? I remember the days when Popular Science might offer how-tos for home stereo equipment or backyard astronomy. But, portable music players? I had seen similar iPod battery how-to articles in Mac publications, but, well, Popular Science was unexpected. Maybe it shouldn't have been a surprise, or would it if not for the strep? |
