Busy day yesterday delayed my blogging on the new Apple-Pepsi promotion (here), this one in Australia. Recall that in the U.S., Pepsi placed one-million free-song tokens under 20-ounce bottle caps. But, Down Under, Apple doesn't operate the iTunes Music Store. So Pepsi and Apple are giving away iPods. Winners are drawn one an hour, starting Monday passed and ending July 11. Ten lucky winners will receive iPods. People play by buying a promotional 600 ml Pepsi (that's 20 ounces, Americans) and then SMS the code for the hour's drawing. Winners receive a SMS reply on their cell phones.

The promotion comes amid tons of buzz about iPod's real market share among portable music players. Several recent news stories questioned Apple's claims. As I blogged yesterday, iPod is quickly reaching cultural icon status. In his recent report, "Portable Media Devices: Beyond Music," colleague Michael Gartenberg explains the attributes consumers seek out in a portable music player. The iPod, and particularly the iPod mini, meet the criteria quite well.

As for those iPod sales, Apple's international online stores list the top-selling items.
