Strong Interest As Irish DTT Market Opens
Irish communications regulator the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has received 9 digital terrestrial TV (DTT) license applications, 8 from domestic operations and one based abroad. Of the 9 applicants, the BCI will choose one station to participate in a 2-year trial. Given the profound impact of DTT in the U.K., the platform's development in Ireland will be closely watched by incumbent cable, fixed wireless and DTH operators.

Applications from BT Ireland, Channel 6, Chellomedia Services, Communicorp Group, Magnet Networks, a joint bid from RT and Eircom, Sky Ireland, TVONE Broadband Media and USP Ireland were received before the August 9 deadline.
The BCI’s pilot trials will originate out of Dublin and County Louth and will simulcast national TV stations RTE1, RTE2, TV3, and TG4. The trial will also include testing of VOD and interactive services via advanced DTT set-top boxes.
