Microsoft Virus Alerts

Microsoft, Network Associates and Trend Micro today announced the formation of the Virus Information Alliance, which seeks to more quickly disseminate information about dangerous bugs. Both antivirus software developers already provide adequate information on their Websites about bug outbreaks. But Microsoft customers that frequently visit the company’s security Website may find beneficial the consolidation of virus warnings into one place.

Call it ironic: VIA debuted the same day the Palyh virus started circling the Internet as an attachment in a support@microsoft.com-disguised e-mail. Microsoft did issue a bulletin on the e-mail virus, which makes changes to Windows registry settings and propagates through Outlook e-mail and network shares. The Palyh alert demonstrates some of the benefits of VIA. Besides providing information about the virus, Microsoft also links to Network Associates and Trend Micro Palyh posts, which include information for updating products or removing infections.
