News sometimes travels slowly.
On Friday and Saturday, several news outlets--WinInfo, Neowin and CNET News.com, among others--reported that there would be no future standalone versions of Internet Explorer. They based their conclusions on a May 7 TechNet Web chat with Brian Countryman, an Internet Explorer product manager. Microsoft conducted the chat to discuss how, for security reasons, Internet Explorer works differently in Windows Server 2003 than other Windows products.
“As part of the OS, IE will continue to evolve, but there will be no future standalone installations. IE6 SP1 is the final standalone installation,” Countryman said, according to the transcript posted on Microsoft’s TechNet Website.
Jupiter Research Director Michael Gartenberg addressed IE's development progress in a May 27 Weblog. His comments appropriately address this issue.
