During his keynote during Microsoft's annual financial analysts meeting, Chairman Bill Gates said that later this year Microsoft would release music software for the Xbox game console. The software, Music Mixer, takes advantage of Xbox's hard drive.
Music Mixer is the strongest indication to date that Microsoft is ready to move Xbox beyond typical gaming. This is not surprising. Xbox's architecture and components, such as the built-in hard drive, position the game console for non-gaming entertainment, such as music listening or digital video recording of television programs.
